Daniel Hemerlein is a twenty two year old bassist and composer living in Brooklyn. Originally from Ardsley, New York, he recently completed his bachelor's of music in Music Theory & Composition with a minor in Media, Culture and Communications at NYU Steinhardt. Proficient on both upright and electric bass, Dan began studying jazz in high school with Chris Anderson (A Great Big World, Rachel Platten, Ingrid Michaelson). Upon starting his higher education, Dan shifted his academic focus to music composition. At NYU, he studied composition with Dr. Tae Hong Park, Ezequiel Viñao, a former student of Olivier Messiaen, and Marc-Antonio Consoli. Additionally, he studied upright bass with jazz legend Ron McClure.
As a bass player, Dan can be found performing several times a week with various independent acts in some of New York's most popular bars and clubs including Rockwood Music Hall, Knitting Factory, and Mercury Lounge. Dan has also broken into the world of musical theater by performing in the pit ensembles of several off Broadway productions and student produced musicals at NYU.
As a composer, Dan's recent focus has been on computer music and multimedia installations with an emphasis on video. Such pieces include an ode to final cut pro x: how I learned to stop worrying and love the blade tool (2015) and it plays chords now (2016). He has composed and arranged works for percussion quartet and string quartet. Dan's work has been performed at NYU's Fredrick Lowe Theater and Provincetown Playhouse. Dan has composed original music for several student films.
In April 2016, Dan released his debut solo EP Content Neutral.
In August 2016, Dan began working full time at Downtown Music Publishing in the Licensing/Administration department.
Dan has performed and recorded with acts such as Modern Diet, Maggie Rogers, Tor Miller, Panther Hollow, Ursae, NYU Community Orchestra, NYU Marimba Ensemble, NYU Percussion Ensemble, High Fascination, Ambler, Saint James and the Whiskey Fires, Little Sur, Saint Mahogany, Talay, Jordan Chude, Bobby Katz Quartet, Lily Lane, Liz Brennan, Evan Stanley, Andrew Smith, Dakota Lille and more. Dan has performed original music by composers including Josh Cohen, Ben Yee-Paulson, Jordan Borg, Marc Akiyama and Yael Litwin.
